Architect Albert Alfonso’s goal while designing the University of South Florida (USF) School of Medicine was to create a clean modern energy efficient building.

He and his design team used sun control on the building’s Southern exposure to reduce glare and solar heat gain of Florida’s harsh afternoon sun. As the system is mounted to the curtain wall, Alfonso wanted to use a single outrigger for multiple sunshades. Construction Specialties designed custom Shadowline Sunshades to his exact specifications. According to Alfonso solar calculations of the 3’ deep sunshades proved to be so effective at reducing heat gain that he was able to save the client additional budget dollars by using standard glass instead of the more expensive insulated glass. The CS Sun Controls reduced the building’s energy usage by 18%, and during peak usage 26.4% is saved.
