For the University of South Florida School of Medicine, Alfonso Architects’ goal was to create a clean, modern building that would be energy efficient and meet the project’s budget. With the building oriented on an east/west axis, Albert Alfonso and his design team decided to use sun control on the building’s Southern exposure to reduce the heat and glare of the afternoon sun.
Alfonso worked closely with CS’ local representative to develop a custom sun control that could be easily mounted to the curtain wall system. The solar calculations of the 3' deep sunshades provided to be so effective at reducing heat gain, that Alfonso was able to save the client additional budget dollars by specifying standard 1/4" glass instead of more costly insulated glass.
