Built between trees and wetlands, the building connects the community spaces on campus to the natural environment. A breezeway allows students to pass through the building from the campus into the forest and leads them to an observation platform looking out on wetlands. The college wanted to reduce glare and solar heat gain while still letting diffused daylight enter into the building.

 

Solution

Native mosses cover the roof and CS Perforated Sun Controls help reduce glare and solar heat gain while still letting diffused daylight enter reducing the need for artificial light and air conditioning. Rainwater is collected and diverted into the wetlands. Built with the goal of reducing energy use and dependence on fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, as expected the project is certified LEED Gold.
