G. Wayne Clough Learning Commons

Challenge

Sustainable design was a priority for the architects as well as reducing solar heat gain while allowing daylight inside.

Solution

Roof top solar panel arrays, roof gardens with native species and rain water collection in a 1.4 million gallon underground cistern for gray water usage like flushing toilets and watering gardens are all ways Clough Commons strives for sustainability. Other initiatives include smart lighting, daylight harvesting and the use of C/S Sunshades to reduce solar heat gain while allowing daylight inside. The temperature and comfort inside are controlled using radiant floor heating and chilled beam cooling. Hot water is supplied using evacuated tube solar collectors. Fresh air is drawn in from outside, is filtered, exchanged and mixed into building’s ventilation system assuring fresh healthy air for the occupants.

PARTNERING TO CREATE CUTTING EDGE SOLUTIONS

The G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (Clough Commons) is an academic building with classrooms, science laboratories, as well as student academic services and common areas.  Collaboration and technology are central to teaching and learning. Built to LEED standards, sustainable design was a priority. The building was used as a set while making the comedy The Internship in 2013. Clough Commons stood in for Googleplex, the headquarters of Google in many scenes during filming.
