Cathedral of Christ the Light

Challenge

Located 4.7 km from the Hayward Fault and 25 km from the San Andreas Fault, this 12-story high oval cathedral is expected to have a 300-year building life and survive a 1000year earthquake similar to the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906.  Charged with accomplishing all this on an active fault line, SOM designed the building on 36 double concave friction pendulum isolators with  a surrounding trench that allows  for over 30” of horizontal movement in addition to allowing for  vertical movement.

 

Solution

CS’s XLS Series and SSR Series expansion joint covers, hidden by insetting the surrounding finish materials, were utilized in this unique moat design.  Both models are able to span the 33” moat while accommodating the movement and aesthetic requirements for this Oakland cathedral.
