Challenge

The architects needed to draw-in yet diffuse the natural sunlight while reducing lighting costs, but still creating a comfortable environment.

Solution

Texas A&M’s ILSB is Certified to LEED® Gold. As the first sustainable building on the A&M campus, the ILSB serves as a benchmark for the University. As part of an overall daylighting system, Perkins + Will incorporated CS Lightshelves onto the oversized windows throughout the labs to help draw-in yet diffuse the natural sunlight. This system reduces lighting costs while creating a more comfortable environment for its world-class researchers.

PARTNERING TO CREATE CUTTING EDGE SOLUTIONS

The ILSB was designed for research investigation in many different areas of interest in the life sciences. Currently, the facility focuses on three general subject areas—bioinformatics, neuroscience, and structural biology. The ILSB includes approximately 220,000 gross square feet of space for research laboratories, teaching, and related activities. The building houses around 30 flexible laboratories, meeting, seminar, and lecture rooms, core support facilities, computational equipment, a 285-seat auditorium, associated auxiliary space and space to house operational staff.
