Challenge
The goal was to reduce the energy required to heat and cool the facility and also as an aesthetic feature on the interior of the medical center.
Solution
When the University Medical Center at Princeton in Plainsboro, NJ, (UMCPP) opened its doors in May 2012, Construction Specialties (CS) products were some of the first things visitors saw. Rising above the curving glass curtain wall on the south facing side of the building is CS Sunshade Trellis. The system runs horizontally above the building to provide shade during mid-day high sun angles.
Inside the expansive atrium is filled with natural light from windows that span the length of the building. CS Wood Wrapped Airfoils, a new interior shade product, are positioned strategically in front of the windows to help regulate and diffuse the sunlight. Used in conjunction with screening attached to the exterior curtain wall reduces the energy required to heat and cool the facility. The same shades are used as an aesthetic feature in other interior areas.
