Mediacom Communications Corporation

Challenge

The eco-friendly building, designed by Barry Posknazer of Ridgewood, NJ, based Poskanzer Skott Architects (PSA), uses the 110,000-gallon rooftop rainwater collection system to irrigate the grounds. Amenities at the state of the art complex include a full service kitchen with indoor and outdoor dining, a gym with high tech fitness and video equipment. Still they needed to reduce solar heat gain and allow in diffused light, but not block the view. They also wanted to create a visual counterpoint to the blue silo and break up the horizontal lines of the building.

Solution

The southwest side of the building features a striking cobalt blue silo, which houses three stories of conference rooms. On the same side the windows are shaded on two levels by Construction Specialties (CS) 100-3 Cantilevered Series Sun Controls. On the curved side of the building they are mounted approximately 3 feet into the building to the segmented steel so they protrude out through the metal wall panels. A CS Sunscreen trellis shades the atrium in the center of the complex.
