de Young Museum

Challenge 

Due to the1989 earthquake damage and the findings in1993 that more earthquake damage would occur, the de Young Museum's board of trustees agreed to rebuild the museum as a state-of-the-art facility. This included the use of a base isolation system that would allow for extreme seismic movement of up to 42" in any horizontal direction.

 

Solution

The CS Gyrometric seismic portal system provided for this movement with no impact on the museum functionality. This very high profile project also required the concealment of these large seismic joints on the exterior. Model XLS seismic joint covers, some as wide as 60", allowed the architect to insert the unique copper skin that is purposely riddled with inconsistencies in order to enhance the material’s natural ability to oxidize. The finished product provided the necessary function with the joints being virtually invisible beneath de Young's one-of-a-kind skin fabricated by A. Zahner Company.
