Broadway Pier Cruise Terminal Port

Challenge

LEED Gold Certified the project was designed to be environmental friendly, accomplished using many methods. More than 93 percent of the construction debris was recycled. More than 20 percent of the total building materials contain recycled content.

Solution

The building includes a 60 kW solar panel system, which offsets at least 28 percent of the building’s energy needs. Two solar panel systems cover the sawtooth roof top. One system is owned by the Port and the other is owned by San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). The sides of the sawtooth roof are CS Louvers allowing for natural ventilation. Water efficient fixtures were incorporated into the building, which reduces water use by 32 percent compared to conventional buildings.  The Port Pavilion contains over 7,550 square feet of windows, allowing visitors to enjoy the views of San Diego Bay and reduce indoor lighting needs. C/S Louvers in Arabian Blue on all elevations allow fresh air to circulate and sea breezes to enter. A shore power system provides power to cruise vessels from the electrical grid, allowing them to shut off their engines, thus reducing their air emissions.

PARTNERING TO CREATE CUTTING EDGE SOLUTIONS

The historic Broadway Pier, constructed in 1919, has accommodated the U.S. Navy, the region’s fishing fleet, cruise ships and the royal yacht in 1983 visit by Queen Elizabeth. Since its recent renovation it is used as a cruise ship berth. It is also available for meetings, parties, conferences, performances or other public events. At other times public access is available, a portion of the pier is available 24 hours a day with another always accessible between sunrise and sunset.
