Bill and Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex and Dell Computer Science Hall

Challenge

Open in early 2013, the two building complex provides space for faculty members and students in areas such as cybersecurity, computer systems, artificial intelligence and robotics. According to the Computer Science Degree Hub, an online resource guide for finding the latest computer science degree programs offered in the United States, their Department of Computer Science ranks 11th in the U.S. and the program curriculum ranks 6th globally in the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Solution

Sustainable design strategies that helped earn the project a LEED Silver rating include CS Grilles that allow natural light through the expansive glass exterior, without harsh glare and solar heat gain and landscaping that collects and filters rainwater. The shape and color of the Paralinear Grilles echo the wrapped slatted, certified sustainable Douglas fir panels of the interior walls, ceilings and stairs. Modular Grilles act as trellises complete with vines to shade stepped terraces in the Atrium between the two buildings. They mimic the design of the signature UT-Austin mix of Texas brick laid in a stack bond or grid-like pattern. All the repeating patterns give the building a cohesive well thought out design that is modern and yet still fits in well with the rest of the Mediterranean style campus.
