Challenge

Due to the orientation of the building, Architects specified two distinctively different sunshades for each elevation.

Solution

To control the sun at lower angles in the morning and after-noon, fixed horizontal line sunshades with trapezoidal blades are used on the Eastern elevation. On the Southern elevation where the sun angle is higher a cantilevered sunshade with 6” airfoils are used. Key features of the ISTB include: research education laboratories, autoclaves, cell culture, dark procedures, flex lab/microscopy, environmental chambers, imaging, BSL-3 laboratories, a magnetic resonance suite and a data center.

This LEED® Gold certified project was technically challenging with an extremely aggressive schedule (18-months), on a tight site surrounded on three sides by occupied facilities.  In total, 5 Interdisciplinary Science + Technology Buildings (ISTB) will be built, with this designed to be the first.
