Challenge

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, known as ‘The General,’ is located along the San Andreas Fault Line. California’s building codes mandate that a hospital must remain operational in the event of an earthquake, so meeting these strict seismic standards was key for Fong & Chan Architects. The goal of obtaining LEED® Gold Certification was also at the forefront of the project, so environmentally responsible products were chosen to accomplish this.

Solution

The General is one of the largest base-isolated structures in the U.S. and uses the most advanced seismic designs available, allowing it to glide 30” in every direction during a seismic event. Fong and Chan Architects chose our expansion joint covers to allow for this movement, and Van-Mulder Sheet Metal, Inc. from Hayward, CA handled the installation. CS’ multi-axial corridor cover (MACC) system seamlessly connects the new hospital tower to the existing structure while the exterior moat covers visually unite the landscape and sidewalk to it.
