Inventor of Seismic Expansion Joint Covers Partners with U.S. Resiliency Council to Bring Public Awareness to Building Safety

Wednesday, June 1, 2016

Muncy, PA – Construction Specialties (CS), a global manufacturer of expansion joint covers, is proud to partner with the U.S. Resiliency Council (USRC) as a Bronze member. As soon as the USRC Building Rating System was announced, CS was the first to sign on as a member.

At the forefront of innovations related to seismic movement challenges, CS supports the USRC’s mission, “to establish and implement meaningful rating systems that describe the performance of buildings during earthquakes…to educate the general public to understand these risks, and to thereby improve societal resilience.”

"At CS, we strive to provide products that augment the seismic performance and resilience of buildings. The USRC is on a mission to bring awareness to the public on the ‘seismic safeness’ of buildings and we are excited to support and promote their initiative,” said Kevin W. Smith, PE Engineering Manager at Construction Specialties.

The USRC Rating System measures the expected performance of a building using the following criteria: personal safety, repair costs, and recovery time. The ratings will benefit architects as well as building owners and identify the expected consequences of a hazardous seismic occurrence.

The USRC seeks to increase the demand for high-performing, resilient buildings that promote public well-being. Thought leaders involved in the council, including CS, will share information to help ensure building safety while addressing the movement challenges that architects and engineers face daily.

As the designer and manufacturer of expansion joint covers for a majority of base-isolated structures in the U.S., CS has seen a substantial rise in high-performance buildings within seismic zones. As a result, CS has become a resource for architects and engineers who have complex building movement issues. The company’s determination to conquer these challenges has resulted in numerous advances in seismic solutions for wind, settlement, thermal and seismic movement.
