Industry experts say, "You need at least 18' of entrance flooring to stop dirt."

Don't let ugly throw down mats ruin your entrance.

According to industry experts, you need a minimum of 18 to 20 feet of walk-off matting to effectively eliminate tracked-in dirt. Alan S. Bigger is Director of Building Services at a Major American University and an expert in the custodial field. He estimates that an investment in effective walk-off matting will be returned to you 110 fold in decreased maintenance costs.
Most architects will incorporate a mat or grid at a building's entrance to stop dirt and water, but if it's less than 18 feet, their efforts can come up a little short. And if the entrance flooring doesn't provide for thorough dirt removal, the building's maintenance staff may use ugly throw down mats whenever there's bad weather.
